I am sure you have heard of the company Netflix who started selling movies-by-mail rental subscriptions. Blockbuster laughed at the idea until Netflix earned 500 million in revenue.
A few years back I bought my first DVD player and inside the box I found an advertisement offer for DVD rentals from an unknown company at that time named Netflix. The business model was a movies-by-mail subscription. Subscribers would pay a monthly fee and receive unlimited movie rentals without the hassles of late fees.
At first, I was leery to try something so different from my normal routine of running down to the local Blockbuster store and picking up a few videos for the weekend. There were a few critical questions and concerns I had involving this pioneering company:
- Would the selection of videos be current?
- Would I have to pay a shipping and handling fee to return the videos?
- How long would it take to get the videos I ordered?
- Was this another dot-com company positioned for failure like so many others?
It actually took a relative of mine to try the service out first before I realized all the benefits of the service. My family and I went home for Christmas and we stayed with my wife’s sister. She had three DVD videos sitting on top of her recently purchased DVD player. The first thing that grabbed my eye was the red envelopes emblazoned with Netflix’s logo.
Many of my initial concerns about Netflix were immediately answered within minutes by my sister-in-law. She explained that the videos could be returned in the prepaid red envelope and that each time one was mailed back, another video from her selection list would come 2-3 days later. She could have up to three DVD’s at a time and there were no late fees associated. As far as video selection, we logged onto her Netflix account and found every new movie at Blockbuster could also be rented from Netflix.
I was sold and could not wait until I got home to start my subscription. I did not need to know if the model was going to work… it simply made too much sense not to. Over the course of a couple of years I was a very happy Netflix customer and referred everyone I knew to the service.
Netflix earned $5 million in revenue during its first year in operation and is expected to do over $500 million in revenue this year. The model has proven so viable that retailers Blockbuster and Wal-Mart have also entered into the movie-by-mail subscription business. Even with this new competition, Netflix predicts 5 million subscribers and $1 billion in annual sales by 2007.
So what does this have to do with you except that you can take advantage of renting unlimited movies with no late fees? Do you remember the statement made earlier about referring everyone I knew to the Netflix service? Fortunately for Netflix, my friends took heed to my recommendation and became paying subscribers. Unfortunately for me, Netflix never sent me a check for referring those customers.
Recently, I came across a company called Gold Entertainment, that has researched the movie rental business and found out that not only is the movie rental business a great industry, but that the Netflix model was a perfect money making model.
They decided to emulate their business off of the Netflix model but with a unique twist, by offering a referral reward system. Gold Entertainment offers the same services as Netflix but rewards individuals who refer others to use the services. This program not only pays a referral commission on any person you refer, but continues to pay month after month as long as your referrals continue to use the service. If your referrals decide to become independent marketers and refer their friends, you receive commission on those individuals as well.
Sounds like a network marketing program doesn’t it? It is except with a very interesting difference. There are no physical meetings to attend and representatives can only directly sponsor two people on their front line, which means there is spill over created to help grow your business even faster.
There are several opportunity and training calls held at various times throughout the week. Representatives in the business are usually trained and attend meetings through web based trainings as well as through conference calls. Weekly emails are sent to alert you of the training time dates, and special announcements. This eliminates the need to attend inconvenient weekly meetings at hotel conference rooms.
Independent marketers also receive their own company sponsored website where their invited guest can log onto and view the business presentation or become customers and rent movies any time of the day from the privacy of their own homes. Building a business strictly online makes this attractive for those who are too shy to attract customers and business partners using the traditional network marketing methods.
I still rent movies via the mail, except now they come in a GOLD envelope instead of the red. I smile every time I see that GOLD envelope because I know not only will I watch a great movie, but now I will be getting paid to watch it.
